'Nylon' Debuts First Digital Series

Pop-culture magazine Nylon has released its first digital series to kick off an upcoming slate of original video produced by its new TV and video programming arm, Nylon Productions.

The series is a weekly, short-form news show called "Nylon News: This Just Happened." The funky program features energetic graphics and blocks of color.

The show is available on Amazon Video through Amazon Video Direct.

Episodes range from 10 minutes to 12 minutes. The first series of ‘This Just Happened’ will be 10 episodes. The show covers pop-culture news, including music, fashion, beauty and entertainment.

Nylon loves nostalgia — especially the '80s and '90s — which drives a lot of the look and feel of what we do across our pages and platforms,” Nylon president Jamie Elden told Publishers Daily. He said the look of "This Just Happened" is a “nod to these eras,” though it is shot and narrated at “millennial speed with rotating editorial contributors and buzzy interviews.”

Elden called the program the “perfect introduction to both Nylon’s voice and the type of content viewers can expect as we expand in the space." The digital series “is based upon how Nylon’s audience in the 18-34 demo consumes content," which is OTT, on demand or on an app, he said.

"Nylon News: This Just Happened" is hosted by Nylon global editor-in-chief Gabrielle Korn and produced and directed by Cortney Wilson, a producer on the Amazon Original series "Transparent."

Nylon wanted to produce a news show because "News" is the fastest-growing vertical, of eight, on its site. One-third of its content online and social media comes from its news vertical, “particularly driven by recent political events,” Elden said.

Lauren Cohen, VP of marketing and entertainment at Nylon, and Kristin Welton, VP at Nylon Studios, serve as executive producers of ‘Nylon News: This Just Happened,’ along with Elden.

Nylon Productions has a slate of both scripted and unscripted, docu-style series for digital distribution in development. Programming will range from 10-minute to 60-minute episodes.

Nylon Productions was formed in 2016 and reaches more than 130 million homes via its OTT channels.
