Appy Last Year: Total Hours Spent With Apps Near Trillion

Consumers can’t enough of their apps -- and, as illustrated by a new report from App Annie, there are many ways to measure their mobile obsession.

Last year, total time spent on apps approached one trillion hours -- with global users spending an average of two to three hours per day with the software, the app tracker finds.

How are people splitting up that time?

Well, among the countries analyzed by App Annie, the average smartphone user makes use of at least nine apps a day, and more than 30 apps a month. That said, iPhone users use slightly more apps per day than Android phone users.

Stateside, users averaged over two hours and 15 minutes per day, which amounts to more than one month out of the year.

Among other categories, utility apps continue to dominate, which App Annie attributes to the fact that they come preinstalled on most phones.

Aside from preinstalled apps, some of the largest categories by average apps used include social networking, communication, and the more general “social” category.

Between operating systems, the average Android user spent 30% more time with games than the average iPhone user -- despite using less apps overall.

Also of note, in most countries analyzed, over 80% of time spent in apps was spent outside of the top app in that country.

Since a few readers will assume that the average person---as opposed to "user"--- devotes over two hours per day to apps, if you project these figures against the total World population--7.5 billion----it works out to about 133 hours per year per person, which places app usage in a clearer perspective. Some people use them a lot; many don't.
