Movie Box Office Reels In Higher Revs

With nearly the first half of 2017 completed, U.S. box-office movie revenues are slightly higher versus the same period the year before.

Season-to-date, U.S. theatrical movie revenues are up 2.7% to $4.82 billion through June 7, according to Boxofficemojo.com. The average ticket price is up 2.2% to $8.84 from $8.65.

Top five movies include Walt Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” at $507.4 million; Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2,” $359.1 million; 21st Century Fox’s “Logan” earned $226.2 million; Universal’s “The Fate of the Furious,” $224 million; and Warner Bros. “The LEGO Batman Movie” nabbed $175.7 million.

The best-performing studios were Disney, at $1.16 billion, as a result of four movies released this year (eight movies overall); Universal, $878.9 million (six 2017 movies, eight overall, which included those released in late 2016); and Fox, $777.3 million (seven 2017 movies, 12 overall).

Warner Bros. came in at $648.4 million (nine movies this year, 22 overall), followed by Lionsgate at $434.8 million (eight movies in 2017; 11 overall); Paramount, $241.3 million (five films in 2017; 11 overall) and Sony at $179.5 million (seven 2017 movies; 10 overall).
